“Wilhelm Schürmann in Conversation with Philipp Fernandes do Brito.”

Review

Wilhelm Schürmann: [...] During our later interview for the series Energien/Synergien, Klaus [Honnef] retrospectively explained that, back in the 1980s, he was not yet in a position to look at it that way. That’s why I quit planning the exhibition [Lichtbildnisse. Das Porträt in der Fotografle, Rheinisches Landesmuseum, 1981] at that time, which I didn’t find sad either. Originally, it was conceived as a joint project, and we were supposed to be co-curators. Klaus had invited me to plan it together with him. When I presented him my concept, it was too global for him. Looking back, he told me that he would gladly do the exhibition this way today. After I did the Dirty Data exhibition in 1992, I was invited as one of the four candidates to lead the next documenta in 1994. I developed a concept for it with Fareed Armaly at the time, but it was really still too unconventional.”
